ACTIVE LEADERSHIP COURSE

The award is designed to provide trained, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic community based physical activity leaders. Leaders will be equipped to work in a wide range of locations including local clubs, community groups, workplaces, community centres and sports’ clubs. Following the course, the successful leader will: –:

Understand their role as a leader and how they will apply it within their organisation

Display an ability to plan and lead a fun physical activity session demonstrating leadership skills such as communication, observation and group management.

Demonstrate an ability to safely lead a group of up to 16 people.

The total course will be 10 to 12 hours comprising of practical and theoretical units.

Eligibility

At the start of the course, trainee leaders should be:

  • Over 16 years in Northern Ireland.
  • Over 18 years in the Republic of Ireland.

Considerations for Course Leaders

In selecting candidates for the course, consideration should be given to the following:

  • A person’s reasons for applying for the course.
  • Opportunities for using the training.
  • Links to clubs, community groups or other groupings.

It is strongly advised that the course organiser is satisfied as to the suitability of applicants to leadership situations, including personal interest, enthusiasm and experience/common sense.

The tutor will also assess these qualities throughout the course.

The Training Course

Aims & Objectives

Firstly it is intended that the course is a practical and enjoyable experience for the participant.

The intended outcome is that the trainee leader will be competent and confident in taking charge of a group for physical activity sessions. Specifically, the successful leader will be equipped with the necessary skills to plan, organise and lead physical activity sessions within their own group setting.

Learning Outcomes

Following the course, the successful leader will:

Course Modules

Course Duration

Practical activities will be used to develop the participants’ leadership abilities, skills and knowledge.

Course Assessment

For a participant to successfully complete the training course, the Tutor should be confident in the leader’s ability to successfully plan and safely lead a fun activity session. All trainee leaders will be continuously assessed throughout the course on their:

  • Application.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Personal skills.

Trainees will receive a tutor evaluation/feedback form identifying areas that may need further work following assessment, and trainees who receive a satisfactory course assessment will be advised as to whether they can lead or co lead Active Leadership sessions within their target group.

Community Walking Leader Training (Level 1&2)

Carlow Sports Partnership work in conjunction with the Irish Heart Foundation to deliver Leader Training for voluntary Community Walking Leaders including;

Community Walk Leader Level 1

The Level 1 Community Walk Leader Training Course enables participants lead safe, enjoyable and health-promoting walking sessions and programmes in their communities. Key content includes Physical Activity Guidelines and Walking, Legal and Safety Issues, Group Management, Group Formation.

Community Walk Leader Level 2

The Level 2 Course aims to enable participants organise and lead ‘treks’ on approved way-marked walking routes, in particular Coillte Trails and Failte Ireland Loops. Key content includes Development of Waymarked Routes, Basic Map Interpretation, Key Websites, Legal and Safety Issues, Group Management, etc.

SportsABILITY Leader Training

CARA develops and delivers training and education courses across the sport, fitness, adventure and education sectors. The aim of CARA is to increase opportunities for people with disabilities to lead an active and healthy lifestyle and to support organisations to be more inclusive of people with disabilities. The courses listed below are organised and delivered locally by the Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs).

Disability Awareness in Sport

This workshop is designed to build awareness around people with disabilities participating in community sport and physical activity.

On completion of the course all attendees will receive a CARA Certificate of Attendance endorsed by Sport Ireland.

Disability Inclusion Training

This course is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge, skills and ideas on how to adapt and modify your sport, physical activity or physical education sessions to make them more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities.
Attendees will be engaged through interactive group work, theory content and will be introduced to adaptation tools which will be applied to a variety of games and activities on how to make these inclusive for all ability groups.
On completion of the course all attendees will receive a CARA Certificate of Attendance endorsed by Sport Ireland, a resource manual and a games booklet full of fun inclusive activities.

Inclusive Fitness Training

This course is designed to increase the confidence and awareness of fitness managers, fitness professionals and all front line staff to work with people with disabilities in the fitness sector.
The training will provide access to resources that will increase the knowledge of fitness managers and fitness professionals to create inclusive environments and programmes in the fitness sector for people with disabilities.
On completion of the course all attendees will receive a CARA Certificate of Attendance endorsed by Sport Ireland and REPS Ireland.

Inclusive Adventure Activities Training

This course is designed to inspire attendees to help make their adventure activities and outdoor environments more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities.
The training will provide access to resources that will increase the knowledge related to Inclusive Adventure Activities.
On completion of the course all attendees will receive a CARA Certificate of Attendance endorsed by Sport Ireland.
A pre-requisite prior to the face to face session is completion of the E-learning content which will inform the attendee about Legislation, Language and Communication, Including People with Disabilities in Physical Activity and Sport and understanding of Paralympic, Special Olympics and Adapted Sport.
The face to face session is a practical based workshop which will involve exploring equipment and facilitating how to engage people with disabilities in an adventure environment, planning for adventure activities, planning for the unplanned with plenty of scenarios and practical activities (land and/or water based).

Autism in Sport

This course will provide attendees with an understanding of Autism focusing on the delivery of sport.
The course will help attendees to recognise and understand key areas of difference as well as looking at practical strategies which will help to include people with autism in sport sessions.
The course makes use of presentation, interactive group work and video.
On completion of the course all attendees will receive a CARA Certificate of Attendance endorsed by Sport Ireland.
The course is offered in-house (our tutor comes to your organisation) €700.00 (this includes materials and expenses for a maximum of 20 people).

PALS Training

A PAL is a Physical Activity Leader who is already part of a group or club and is willing to lead activities. PALs lead their local group in things like short exercise routines, fun games, simple dances and sports like pitch and toss. Groups may be an Active Retirement group, a sports club, an ICA group or some social group that meets regularly. Groups get great benefits from having a few PALs to lead activities.

The group members will:

  • be healthier and happier have more energy attract more members because they offer a greater variety of activities.
  • have more chances to meet with other groups.
  • take part in more activities with other groups.
  • have access to more information about the Go For Life programme.
